2-pointer in Washington County |
Trail report:
Access is gained from W. Center St. in Veyo which leads to Veyo Shoal Creek Rd (dirt) at the bottom of the canyon. Veyo Shoal Creek Rd is a well-maintained dirt road that can be taken all the way to the base of the mountain. Personally, I parked at the entrance of Dixie National Park and rode an ATV to the base, but certainly not required to reach it. The access is fairly easy and the ascent is only a few hundred feet. The ground is soft dirt with some scrub brush and many flowers in the spring. Some rock outcroppings on the top allow for easy antenna set up.

The experience:
It was a little windy, but a very nice day. The flowers were indeed in bloom, although you have to be fairly close to see them. The hike is easy and fairly short, and as you can see, very pleasant to see--the views of other mountains are beautiful as well. There's a nice rock outcropping that lends itself great for setting up the mast as well as being able to have the radio on a flat surface and to operate while standing comfortably.
Besides just the setup, the bands were really busy with lots of calls coming in. I had four different summit-to-summit contacts, three from Colorado and one from South Dakota. I had the time and was enjoying the day so I stayed on quite a bit longer than I
normally would. A great way to spend a spring day!
